Also known as: Gigabit Passive Optical Network, passive fibre network
GPON uses passive splitters instead of active equipment in the field. From one central port a fibre runs across the site, being split along the way to individual units.
Because no power or cooling is needed in the field, GPON is ideally suited to large sites: holiday parks, campsites, business parks and assisted-living complexes.
Capacity is shared across the connected units. A well-designed GPON network accounts for the evening peak in high season, not the yearly average.
How we apply this
At holiday parks we lay GPON all the way into the chalet, with TV and wifi over the same fibre.
